Nightvision isn’t magical. It amplifies existing ambient light. What happens when no light (or VERY little light) exists?

Infrared illumination could become necessary. There is a spectrum of light in the IR range, but to keep it simple: IR light to your nods is like white light to your eyes. Your eyes cannot see the IR, but your NV unit can.

The downside is other users of NV can also see your IR signature (except if you are running certain wavelengths of IR coupled with a Photonis 4G intensifier tube, but that’s another topic).

Cool fact: animal eyes reflect under NV / IR just like they do with white lights.

Is it bad to handle your medical gear? Should you ever get it out to familiarize yourself with it?

We think it’s worse to be unprepared.

You learn from handling, testing, and going hands on. That might mean you duplicate certain gear specifically for training. How can you expect yourself to deploy that Cat7 TQ if you’ve never done it before? We have duplicate kit marked “trainers” for that purpose.

You also can learn a ton just by unpacking your new med kit. Study its layout. Become familiar. When you need it, you need it now. Not in ten minutes…now.

Set yourself up with a good foundation, take some basic med classes, and become more prepared.

One thing we do on our range days is pause before we begin and we take 30 seconds to just show everyone where the closest medical kit is. Don't skip this step! Whether you are shooting alone, or in a group: Stage your medical kit. Make it VERY accessible. Test your theory. Have it ready to deploy in 15 seconds. ⁠

On body range medical is another great option, and we use the responder IFAK on our belts, chest rigs, or plate carriers for that reason. ⁠
